Diego Maradona has left his post as Argentina boss after a unanimous vote from the Argentine Football Association.Maradona had been offered a new four-year contract but said he would only continue on condition that his backroom staff remained. He met with AFA president Julio Grondona on Monday, but the differences between the parties could not be resolved.
go Maradona managed to steal the limelight during his playing career and he has managed to do the same as a Manager during the World Cup in South Africa, he may have been entertaining to watch but in the end his reign as Boss of Argentina ended in failure with the team losing to Germany in the Quarter-Finals. The Argentinians were many people’s pick for the tournament after breezing through the early games in some style but up against an in form and strong German side they simply brushed aside. They looked short of ideas despite having the lion share of the ball and eventually went down 4-0, with that defeat it is understood that Maradona will will leave his position as Head Coach of the team.
Maradona is still a hero in his homeland and was clearly loved by the players but when push came to shove his team were found out against a good opposition, the Germany game was his first real test at the tournament and they failed to pass the examination. They have all the attacking flair needed to win a World Cup but they were unable to gel together and in particular Maradona failed to get the best out of Lionel Messi, the Barcelona winger is simply the best player in the world but he failed to hit the back of the net and didn’t quite hit top form in the formation set out by Maradona.
I think it has been clear since Maradona took over the job that he is not a tactician so it is no surprise they were found out by the Germans but in the end it was his shortcomings that look to have cost the team the World Cup, he is now thought to be mulling over his future with a Copa America to start planning for in South America. Whatever your opinion on Maradona as a player and a man there is no doubting that he was one of the stars of the show on the touchline in South Africa. He was living every touch of the ball alongside his players whilst dressed as a Mafia Boss on the sideline, Argentina may have come up slightly short this time around but most including the Sack Race would love to see him on the bench again in four years time.
There is no doubting that the Argentinian fans would love to see him stay in the job, the team were mobbed when they arrived back home despite losing in the last eight and he remains as a popular as ever despite only making it to the last eight with a hugely talented squad of players.
